Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the creator of psychoanalysis, the very first school of thought that focused on the implications of the unconscious desires and impulses of the human mind. His greatest contribution lies in radically shifting the perception of mental illnesses, which was always thought to be caused by the organic degeneration of the human brain. Freud proposed exploring a person’s past traumas and experiences to understand the origin of their issues instead of resorting to physical medical examinations, which rarely yielded real results.
