 Now housed at the Kunsthalle Humburg, in Germany, this iconic painting is widely considered to be one of the masterpieces of Romanticism and an archetypal work of the era. It depicts a man standing on a rocky cliff with his back to us, holding a walking stick and wrapped in a dark overcoat. As his hair blows in the wind, we see him gazing into a vast landscape covered in dense fog with forests & mountain peaks in the far background. The fog runs all the way to the horizon, eventually blending in with and becoming indistinguishable from the cloudy sky. It is an evocative image, showing a contemplative figure standing in self-reflection, observing a grand scene that is often interpreted to be spiritual in nature.
